Santander is a particularly attractive location for study abroad. One of the country's most fashionable resorts in summer, it is a beautiful city of 200,000 people set on a sparkling bay on Spain's northern coast, approximately 300 miles from Madrid and 150 miles from the French border. A one-day ferry links the city to England. Santander is also within easy reach of some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Spain, as well as the caves of Altamira, which have been called the "Sistine Chapel of Prehistoric Art," and the picturesque village, now a national monument, of Santillana del Mar. Though the coastal climate is moderate even in winter, skiing is available as early as December at an inland ski resort 45 miles from Santander. Sunbathing and surfing on the magnificent beaches are possible as late as mid-October. The city is an important cultural and intellectual center, being the site of two universities: Universidad de Cantabria and Universidad Internacional Menendez Pelayo.

Activities

Santander Activities

Afternoons and weekends are times for activities. Our goal is for students to get to know each other and the Spanish Culture while having fun. This is why we organize and promote different cultural activities. Sometimes they are with the teachers and others in a group, but they are always recommended by the IH staff. These kinds of activities reflect the relaxed and familiar environment that characterizes our school and gives students confidence by putting into practice what they have learned in class. Many cultural activities are even held within the school.

Entertainment

A unique characteristic of Santander is the quality of its restaurants. For example in the centre of the city, there is a restaurant that holds the highest distinction, the Estrella Michelin, and there are many tapa bars where it is possible to try the best Spanish food for very little money. After eating well, there is a fantastic night life both in the bars and discos, and on the street. Activities

We strongly recommend students to take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance in their country of origin to cover any loss, sickness or accident which may occur during the course. Students may also take out medical insurance through the school.
Students from the UE countries can obtain the E-111 form in their respective countries to receive medical assistance in Spain. Remember to bring the original copy with you.
